Planning storage room by room

Sort what you need to store before choosing a piece. Things you want hidden or locked away, such as documents, toys or cleaning supplies, belong in closed cabinets; books, plants and baskets suit open shelves or a divider; pots, plates and the gas cylinder have their own kitchen pieces.

Measure height as well as floor space. Units here run from about 35 to 120 cm wide and 24 to 46 cm deep, and the tallest stand over 210 cm, so check the ceiling, windows and wall switches before choosing a tall one. Secure anything taller than about 150 cm to the wall, especially if children like to climb.

Laminated board covers most of the range and wipes clean with a damp cloth, but keep it off wet floors. Metal racks and PVC pieces cope better in a wet kitchen or laundry area.
