Choosing a desk that fits the way you work

Length decides what fits on top. A 3 foot table, about 90 cm, takes a laptop and a notebook, while 4 to 6 foot tables, roughly 120 to 180 cm, leave room for a monitor, papers and a printer. One 4 foot office table comes 58 cm or 71 cm deep, and the deeper top keeps a screen at a more comfortable distance.

Most desks here are about 76 cm high, within the usual 72 to 76 cm range for adults. For children, a desk of that height works with an adjustable chair and a footrest. Cable holes on several office tables keep wires tidy, and a 3 drawer mobile pedestal can roll under the desk to hold papers.

Laminated board and melamine tops resist scratches and are quick to wipe down, which suits daily work and homework. Veneer over Malaysian Oak and MDF shows real wood grain, so put a desk mat under the mouse and keep drinks on a coaster.
