What to check before buying a dining set

A set takes the guesswork out of matching heights and finishes, so the main decision is size. Choose a 1+4 set for a compact dining area or a family of four, and a 1+6 set if guests come often and the room allows. The tables in this range measure up to about 145 cm long, so measure your space with the chairs pulled out, not tucked in.

Look closely at the seats. Vinyl seats in several of the sets wipe clean easily, while Challis fabric feels softer but needs regular vacuuming. Sets marked Solid use solid wood throughout the table, and veneered tables give an even grain that resists warping in humid weather.

Keep the set out of direct sun so the two finishes age evenly, and wipe spills from both the table and the seats promptly.
